Did you know the @ASICS brand name is an acronym for the Latin expression “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano” (“A sound mind in a sound body”), a quote from the Roman satirist Juvenal?

After returning home from the war in 1945, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka established the ONITSUKA sporting goods company in Japan, in 1949. The Latin phrase came as an inspiration to him for producing athletic shoes with the aim of nurturing healthy young people through sports.

Onitsuka started developing basketball shoes in the 1950s giving out prototype shoes to players, who tested them repeatedly, allowing them to refine and perfect the shoes.  The range of sports activities serviced by the company expanded to a variety of Olympic styles used since the 1950s by athletes worldwide.

The company’s philosophy has always been based on research into sports mobility techniques, developing and using new technology materials for greater support, cushioning, cooling, and superior control, in order to make lighter blister-free, better-performance shoes.

Today, ASICS is recognized as one of the best running shoe brands on the market. ASICS shoes are very good quality and are made with materials that are safe, comfortable, and durable. 58% of the company’s income comes from the sales of performance running shoes.

Nike, Inc. (originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports) was founded to sell Onitsuka Tiger shoes in the US. When Phil Knight visited Japan in 1963 shortly after he graduated from Stanford University he was impressed by Onitsuka Tiger shoes and immediately visited the Onitsuka Tiger office and asked to be their sales agent in the US.[9] After a number of years, the relationship crumbled and both companies sued each other, with Nike retaining the naming rights to several shoes.

Asics is a truly global brand, based on research and technology for the benefit of sports, athletes, and their healthy minds and bodies.
